Windows and Stains

David Graves loves his home state of Alabama. Through his profession as a photographer, David has used his gift to capture moments from Fairhope to Florence.  A few years ago, David contacted our church office and asked if he could take some specific photos of our church.  He had an idea for a book of pictures emphasizing the faith-based community.  In his book, “Alabama Faith; Churches and Stained Glass”, you will find a page dedicated to First Baptist Church of Florence.

Stained glass windows have been a fixture in churches for hundreds of years. There is something about them that seems to draw a spirit of reflection and stillness.  Let’s be honest, we’ve all daydreamed a few times in church and often found ourselves fascinated by the windows with pictures.  Then those pictures seem to come to life as you view them. The fact is that many stained glass windows do often portray the story of Jesus and his time on this earth. Even in our beautiful sanctuary there are 10 or 11 stained glass windows that reflect the gospel story.

At night the windows lie almost dormant, but when the sun rises and begins to flex its light, the windows come to life.  The light shining through the church windows brings the story of Christ to life.  Poetic and prophetic in many ways.  When we allow His Light to shine through us… well you get the picture! After all, just like the windows, we all have a few stains in our lives.

During Holy Week this year we will introduce a new way of reflecting on my God by using a tool of reflection, stained glass windows.  April 14th – 18th we will open our sanctuary each day for a few hours for our community to come and see God’s GLORY REVEALED. It will be a time for individuals to view the stained glass windows and the light shining through in more than one way.  Then through a guide we will give each person, they can spend some quiet time reflecting on the Lord and what the Passion week truly means to them as we lead up to Easter. His Glory seen through pictures on a window to remind us of His love for us at the cross.  Using the stained glass windows to accentuate the story of Christ in an intentional way of communicating the gospel to our city.

I encourage you to come and join us.  Each day from 11 am – 2 pm the sanctuary will be open during Holy week.  You can do the devotionals all in one day or you can split them up and do a few each day. We will even have a time on Thursday evening for those who can’t come in the day to join us.  But only should you make plans to join us but bring someone with you.  Share with others through social media or word of mouth to come and reflect on His GLORY REVEALED as we walk window to window. Easter is an incredible time for the Church to be the Church!  Let’s take advantage of this time of the year to share with our neighbors about a story through stained glass windows.  It’s going to be amazing!
