Wait Until Next Year

It was several years back and my nephew Daniel was just a little boy.  He and his family had joined us for Easter Lunch and as we were outside taking pictures I started to brag on my nephew.  “I hear you are pretty fast on the baseball field?”  I thought my good intentions of encouraging the youngster were simple and would result in a thank you or an appreciate it.  Instead the little rascal looked up at me and said, “wanna race?”

We are built with a competitive spirit within us.  One of my favorite video clips I recently saw was from many years back when an elementary school in England had a race between the moms. Royal children of England attended the school, but nobody expected Princess Diana to enter the race.  But her competitive nature got the best of her as she jumped in and raced and won.  There is something within us all that we compete.

When a season comes to a close for a team, a band, or any competitor they will often respond by saying, wait until next year.  If they did not achieve their dream this year, they always were looking forward to the next opportunity. Chicago Cubs fans were notorious for always saying, maybe next year will be our year. It was hope with a question mark.

As we celebrated Easter this past weekend, I couldn’t help but examine the resurrection from every angle I could possibly within the scriptures.  When I began to see what the Victory Jesus brought forth encompassed it is quite overwhelming.  He didn’t go against one opponent death, but he took on several opponents in going to the cross and then the resurrection. Death, hell, and satan all took on Jesus at the same time, 3 on one and Jesus wins.  Here is one of my takeaways, the resurrection was a winner takes all event!

Death didn’t get interviewed after the resurrection and say, “wait til next year.”  Hell didn’t come out with a prepared statement saying that they had a lot of players returning for next season.  The devil could not comment about the next time they would face off how he would approach the game differently.  Because Calvary was a winner take all event!

Do you realize how free we should feel today knowing that we don’t have to worry about the next time Jesus has to do this again?  Do you realize we don’t have to worry if Jesus will repeat next season?  “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36. In a world filled with worry we no longer have to be anxious about our salvation. There is no rematch, nobody can say wait til next year, it is a one and done deal.  The resurrection is the final score.

“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”  I Corinthians 15:55-57
