A Familiar Place

“Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him.” Luke 22:39.

You can learn a lot about a person if you spend 3 years following them around as a close friend. The disciples of Jesus were often surprised by His teachings and interactions as they followed Him. Yet at the same time they were quite familiar with some of the routines of Jesus as well.  One of those we find is that Jesus often retreated to the Mount of Olives.  It was a place of rest and security it seemed.  But more importantly it was a place where Jesus would seek to spend time with the Father in prayer.  The disciples knew this place well. Luke says He was accustomed to this practice. It was a familiar place for Jesus and his twelve.

When do you pray? I mean is there a certain familiar place set aside for you and your Heavenly Father to convene?  A friend of mine who is a ranch farmer recently told me that he loves being in the pasture because it is there that he talks with God.  Another friend of mine tells me she loves to meet with God while she is running.  Some of you enjoy a back porch meeting with the Lord and others it’s a quiet room with a special chair.  The fact is as followers of Christ, we all need that familiar place to meet with the Lord. Do you have a Mount of Olives place in your life?

I love that Luke tells us that Jesus was accustomed to going there. It was intentional. It was inspirational. It was important!  Jesus journey to the Mount of Olives was well an intentional time He set aside to pray. Jesus was most intentional about prayer in His life as He was anything.  His familiar place of prayer also was inspirational to his disciples. It states that they followed Him. It would become an inspiration to the faithful disciples for the rest of their life.  Finally, it was important to Jesus. He set aside the time for prayer because He valued that time with His Father most of all.

The question is this, how important is our Mount of Olives moment in our own life today?
Listen to the words of a song from Larnelle Harris called, I Miss My Time with You.

There He was just waiting, In our old familiar place
An empty spot beside Him, Where once I used to wait.
To be filled with strength and wisdom for the battles of the day
I would have passed Him by again If I didn't hear Him say…

I miss My time with you Those moments together
I need to be with you each day And it hurts Me when you say
You're too busy…Busy trying to serve Me
But how can you serve Me, When your spirit's empty
There's a longing in My heart, Wanting more than just a part of you
It's true, I miss My time with you”
