The Funny Thing is, it's ok
One of my favorite songs we sing at FBC is “Word of God Speak” made famous by the group Mercy Me. Here is the chorus:
“Word of God speak ,,, Would You pour down like rain
Washing my eyes to see … Your majesty
To be still and know … That You're in this place
Please let me stay and rest …In Your holiness … Word of God speak.”
This past Sunday, our deacons placed Bibles throughout the sanctuary that people can use on any given Sunday. Even more importantly, we offer to anyone visiting with us, if they do not have a Bible, feel free to take that copy of God’s Word with you to be your own. This past Sunday already a few Bibles were taken. Hallelujah!
When the apostle Paul was mentoring young Timothy, he reminded him of the importance of God’s Word. “16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Young Timothy finds out that the Scriptures have many purposes. First it was inspired by God, therefore it is accurate and Truth. Second it was to present sound doctrine for the believer. Third it was to help bring reproof and correction of the believer. The scriptures would give instructions to believers as well. Finally, it makes the statement that the man of God may become complete and equipped for their calling. Paul’s point to Timothy was that the Word of God was not to take a backseat to anything else within his journey of faith.
I cannot encourage you enough to have a daily time in the Bible reading God’s Word and at the same time allowing God’s Word to impact you. There are numerous devotionals, online reading plans, even apps you can download, that will guide to read God’s Word daily. It’s up to you!
In the song by Mercy Me, the prayer of the song is found in the chorus above. As a matter of fact, it is often my prayer that I use before I open the Bible, The key to the prayer is always though, Word of God speak. When we are willing to lay down everything and seek God in the Bible it is amazing how loud the Holy Spirit can become in the quietness of the moment. Distractions will happen and they are not by coincidence. The enemy hates you diving into the scriptures. Stay focused and stay committed. If you miss a day, then pick up tomorrow. It’s not a chore but rather it’s a relationship you are building.
Embrace God’s Word but most importantly allow God’s Word to embrace you. This world can get a little crazy and life can be filled with many bumps in the road. So many times we want to express our desires, demands and discouragement to God. But God’s Word wants to speak to us in our darkest valleys. We all have our moments and to the point we don’t know what to pray, or even how to pray. But as the song says, the funny thing is it’s ok. Just allow God’s Word to speak and allow your heart to listen.
