12 went out . . . Ripple Effects
“ When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick” Luke 9:1-2
I love this passage so very much. Jesus had performed miracle after miracle and the disciples had witnessed every one of them. They had been with the Lord so much that they were very comfortable watching Jesus do His thing amongst the people. But then it came time for the disciples to take the next step. Can you imagine the emotions these dozen men had as they went forth? It was time for their training to be put into action. In many ways, it was their first mission trip.
This past week, we were blessed to have a mission team travel to North Carolina to do mission work. Ironically our team also consisted of 12 people. The team of twelve returned this week with much joy after seeing how God worked through them and even in them as they served others in the Carolinas. I have never been so proud of our church as I have been in sending, going and serving. They went not knowing what exactly to expect and yet knowing that God would provide. Later this summer we will hear from our team about their amazing week.
The impact of a mission trip always causes ripples in many different directions. The people of First Broad Baptist Church will forever remember the team from Florence, Alabama. I spoke with their pastor, Steve Chastain on Monday and he was still celebrating our mission team’s impact. He even said that his prayer is that it will inspire their church to do a mission trip of their own in the near future. Ripple effect. But it also should inspire FBC Florence for the next mission trip we can take more and do more. Ripple effect. Deeper friendships were developed. For years Cynthia Kershaw has taught girls about missions. This week she worked side by side with some of the same girls she taught when they were younger. More ripples continue. It draws brothers and sisters in Christ closer to one another. Continued ripples.
God is still calling and sending us on mission endeavors. Some are close by and some are far away. We have several of our college students out on missions this summer. More than ever pray for them in the next few weeks as well. The mission is the same as when Jesus sent out his first twelve, go to the towns and preach the gospel. Whether it be through manual labor, conversations, ministry opportunities or serving in different capacities, the mission field is still wide open. When we go in the name of Jesus, the ripple effects are for eternity.
