Hope does not Disappoint

He was only a lad at the early age of 15.  In his day and age, young teenage boys worked the farm, did schoolwork and started noticing girls. In every generation a 15 year old is still considered a blossoming youngster with much room for growth.  But for this youngster, it was a matter of life or death.

His name was Jospeh Plumb Martin. He hailed from the great state of Massachusetts and served as a private in the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War starting at the age of 15.  He was at the infamous and freezing Valley Forge that we have read about in our history books.  He also was at the battle of Monmouth and Battle of Brooklyn to name a few of his wartime stories. He saw the American Revolution unfold and was a part of it and lived to tell about it unlike many of his fellow soldiers.

Martin would serve until the age of 24 before being discharged. He would then get married to his wife, Lucy, and end up raising five children.  He lived in the town of Prospect, Maine and would farm there and do many other jobs including the Town Clerk for over 25 years.  What Martin is most famous for is his diary he kept as a soldier that would later be converted by Martin into a book known today as, Narrative of a Revolutionary Soldier. This book offers a deep insight into the life of a soldier at that time and the coming of a country.
As we celebrate Independence Day, we celebrate it because of our forefathers that were so famous like Washington, Franklin, Adams and Jefferson.  But we also are just as grateful for those not as famous such as Joseph Plumb Martin.  He did not sign any famous document or become a general but in the end one thing he did was very simple… PERSEVERE!

The United States of America is here because over the years we have been a people to persevere.  Through tragedy, war, pandemics, and inner strife the great people of this nation have found a way to persevere. It wasn’t always the famous but rather it was the average American who found a way to keep moving forward.  Much of that I like to believe is because of the foundation of this great country being based upon our belief in the One Living God!

I’m reminded of a passage in the New Testament that says, “3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Romans 5:3-5. Paul reminds us of a picture of how our faith in God often works. Tribulation to Perseverance to Character and in turn Hope! It’s not always easy but it is always worth it. If we do persevere in this journey with God we will find as Paul states, “Now hope does not disappoint!!!”

This Independence Day I am thankful for those who have persevered to make this country great.  But I am even more thankful to know that as a follower of Christ there is a great Hope promised for those who are in Christ Jesus.  I strive to persevere to advance the Kingdom of God and to bring Him all the glory in my life. In doing so might I also do my small part in helping this great country to continue to persevere!
